Nyenrode Starts Governance Academy
There has recently been a great deal of public debate concerning the effectiveness of governance by the bodies that are responsible for it. Nyenrode is responding to this development by establishing a governance academy. Its aim is to develop the profession and to find more effective and efficient forms of governance. To this end, it will be cooperating with governance, businesses and intermediate parties as well as the Nyenrode Center for Public Auditing and Controlling.

 Career event: 20 companies, 173 interviews with students
The thirteenth edition of the Nyenrode Career Event was held on 10 November, with twenty companies taking part. In the course of the day they conducted a total of 173 interviews with Nyenrode students. The new structure of the Career Event included an interactive business café that provided an informal forum where students and the participating companies could meet.

Pim Berendsen of TNT Post wins Young Captain Award 2010
Pim Berendsen, the general director of Business Unit Data & Document Management at TNT Post, has been elected Young Captain 2010. This was announced yesterday at the traditional dinner for finalists at Het Loo Palace. The Young Captain Award is presented annually to a talented business leader who stands out for having an influence on his or her own company in an early career stage, and furthermore exhibits vision in social and economic matters. The winner and the two runners up can take part in Nyenrode's New Board Program for a year.

Presentation of Dutch Polish Trade Award 2010
The Dutch Polish Trade Award 2010 has been won by Dutron. This company is based in Srem, to the west of Poznan. Dutron specializes in cable trees and technical assemblies for the motor industry, the telecoms sector and mechanical engineering. The purpose of the award is to draw positive attention to economic relations between the Netherlands and Poland and to further stimulate these relations. The Raben Group, a provider of logistical services, won the Sustainable Entrepreneurship Award. A team of MSc students from Nyenrode joined students from Poland's Kozminski University to visit both companies in September, as well as 28 other companies. Input from the students' findings had a great influence on the jury in its selection of the winners. This research project was sponsored by Rabobank and ING. The selection took place on 23 November in the ING House in Amsterdam.

The School of Accountancy & Controlling is to start the NOvAA AA Vocational Course at the end of January 2011. This post-HBO course is being organized in partnership with the Hogeschool of Arnhem and Nijmegen. In the long term, the merging of the professional organizations NIVRA and NOvAA, combined with the new legislation for the accountancy profession, may lead to a new educational model. Two campus weekends for International and Executive MBA prospects

Masterclass on Doing Business and Innovating with Services
Although the manufacturing industry already has years of experience in innovation, service providers have only just begun a very necessary process of enhancing professionalism in this field. In partnership with Exser, the centre for innovation in services, Nyenrode is therefore starting the masterclass "Doing Business and Innovating with Services" on 3 February 2011.

ICT Sector Wholeheartedly Embraces International Executive MBA in Business & IT
With the signing of an accord, the ICT sector has officially given its full support to the International MBA in Business and IT recently launched by Nyenrode and TU Delft. The agreements were signed during the CIO day at the end of November. The signatories feel so positive about the Nyenrode program that they have officially promised their support and will work to roll out this program (which is unique in Europe) to other member states. The accord was signed by DSM, Philips, Rabobank, Cisco, IBM, SAP, TU Delft and Nyenrode Business Universiteit.

Lisette van der Hel–van Dijk and Paul Hilbers New Professors in Regulation
Dr. Lisette van der Hel–van Dijk RA has been appointed as professor in Effectiveness of Regulation. Van der Hel is connected with Nyenrode's regulation academy. She will develop new (international) regulation strategies, coordinate academic research relating to regulation and organize academic publications and courses relating to the subject. In addition, Dr. Paul Hilbers has been appointed as part-time professor in Regulation of Financial Institutions with effect from 1 November. His academic chair is also an element of the newly established regulation academy.

Mijntje Lückerath–Rovers Professor of Corporate Governance
Dr. Mijntje Lückerath–Rovers has been appointed as professor of Corporate Governance, with regard particular focus on Board Practices. With this appointment, the university has expanded its multi-disciplinary approach to this subject. Her academic chair is part of the School of Accountancy and Controlling.

Jacques de Swart appointed as Professor of Applied Mathematics
Nyenrode's School of Accountancy and Controlling has appointed Dr. Jacques de Swart to the position of professor of Applied Mathematics. His appointment his intended to contribute to innovation in the profession of accountancy and controlling. There is an ongoing search for more efficient methods of data analysis in this field. Accountants and controllers have to be able to check the increasing quantity of data ever faster. The intention is that applied mathematics should help them to do this.

Doctorate for Tineke Lambooy
On 23 November, Tineke Lambooy, a senior researcher at Nyenrode's Center for Sustainability, was awarded her doctorate by the University of Leiden. The title of her thesis is "Corporate Social Responsibility: legal and semi-legal frameworks supporting CSR. Developments 2000-2010 and case studies". In her thesis, Lambooy concentrates on the interaction between CSR and law. She also examines CSR from a broader perspective in the form of best practices. Among other things, she makes a case for tightening up the Corporate Governance Code (the 'Frijns Code' that succeeded the 'Tabaksblat Code'), with the effect that companies have to state on their websites what code(s) of conduct they follow and what their concrete (if possible quantified) ambitions are for CSR in the current year and for the long term.

 Q Fever Committee led by Gert van Dijk presents Final report
The Q fever evaluation committee presented its final report on 22 November. At the request of the Cabinet, the committee examined how Q fever is dealt with and counteracted in the Netherlands and came to a critical final conclusion. The committee was led by Prof. Gert van Dijk, associated with Nyenrode's Center for Entrepreneurship.

Compliance Award 2010 for Edgar Karssing
On 12 November, Edgar Karssing was presented with the Dutch Compliance Award 2010 at the Nieuwspoort International News Centre. Since 2004 the Compliance Award has been presented annually to a person or institution for special services in the field of compliance and especially for the enhancement of professionalism in the compliance function.

Dennis Vink Speaker at National Mortgage Congress
On 6 October, Dr. Dennis Vink, associate professor of finance, was one of the speakers at the National Mortgage Congress in the Kurhaus in The Hague. He spoke about strengthening banks' buffer capital by selling Dutch mortgages and about the margins that banks make on Dutch mortgages.

Despite having extensive networks, professionals mainly approach immediate colleagues for advice. Even professional colleagues with other organizations are hardly ever consulted. This was the conclusion of a large-scale study of the structure and dynamics of the social networks of professionals. The study was conducted at the request of Bureau Zuidema by the Nyenrode's chair of Strategic Talent Management, led by Prof. Lidewey van der Sluis.

 Book "Aanbestedend inkopen"
At the end of November, the book "Aanbestedend inkopen: succes verzekeren. Vroegtijdig professioneel samenwerken" (Procurement by tender: ensure success. Cooperate professionally at an early stage) was published. It is edited by Gert-Wim van de Meent, professor of law on tendering at the UvA and partner with Loyens & Loeff, together with Prof. Jacques Reijniers, professor of procurement management and chairman of the board of the NIC. In the public sector, one must comply with stringent European rules on invitations to tender. These pose great challenges for organizations because procurement is an innovative commercial and enterprising process. In addition to a conceptual explanation of procurement and invitation to tender, the book sketches creative points for attention and provides practical tips for reducing the divide between purchasers and procurement lawyers.
 Creative Accounting, Fraud and International Accounting Scandals
Prof. Henk Langendijk, professor of External reporting at the Nyenrode School of Accountancy & Controlling, has written a chapter of the book 'Creative Accounting, Fraud and International Accounting Scandals' edited by Michael Jones. The book deals with accounting scandals in twelve different countries over four continents. In his chapter 'Financial Accounting Scandals in the Netherlands', Langendijk briefly discusses creative accounting at RSV and Fokker. Most of the chapter is devoted to the Ahold fraud case.
Moral Dilemmas of Mayors
Prof. Ronald Jeurissen, professor of business ethics and director of the European Institute for Business Ethics (EIBE), and Suzanne Verheij, policy official with the Bureau for the Promotion of Integrity in the Public Sector (BIOS), have jointly written a chapter on the moral dilemmas of mayors in the Integrity Yearbook 2011. Based on their research, they conclude that mayors have extensive freedom to choose their personal style in the exercise of their office, including how they deal with moral dilemmas. At the same time, they have to deal with a high degree of normative uncertainty. Each dilemma raises the question of the true extent of the mayor's influence and authority.
 Research into the Innovative Strength of the Dutch Agro-food Sector The book "Triple P Business Development in the Dutch Agro-Food Sector" by Prof. Taco van Someren of Ynnovate and Dr. André Nijhof of Nyenrode was published on 17 October. On behalf of TransForum, they studied the innovative strength of the Dutch agro-food sector. The book makes a case for the importance of sustainability to the private sector. On the other hand, it also shows where it becomes difficult to achieve sustainable innovations. A masterclass on this theme was also held at Nyenrode on 15 - 16 November.
 Nyenrode Finance Day
On Friday, 19 November the second Finance Day was held at Nyenrode, organized by the Nyenrode student investment association 'De Zilveren Rijder'. Last year's financial congress focused mainly on future investment, but this year the focus shifted to economic developments. The speakers included Diederik Schmull (former Vice President of Credit Suisse and Morgan Stanley), Han de Jong (Chief Economist at ABN AMRO) and Rob van Gelder (former CEO of Heijmans and Boskalis).
Europe India Institute hosts delegation from India and Tanzania
Early November, Nyenrode's Europe India Institute hosted a delegation of 15 executives from India and Tanzania at its campus. Senior executives of companies from various sectors such as banking, ICT, media, import-export, automobile, oil and gas, engineering, healthcare, and plastics were part of the week long delegation. During the week, the delegates attended generic courses on leadership and management as well as several specific courses. They also visited the port of Rotterdam, APM container terminal, the Dutch flower auction in Aalsmeer, and Kuehne Nagel.
