Nyenrode Buys Back Own Shares from Hogeschool INHolland
Hogeschool INHolland and Nyenrode Business Universiteit have decided to terminate their cooperation agreement. INHolland took a 50 percent stake in the university in September 2004, and the Nyenrode Foundation is now repurchasing that stake. The two educational institutions will continue to cooperate in the future, where possible, in the field of education and research relating to business administration. The formal partnership was terminated because it did not adequately produce the results that the two parties had envisaged when they entered into it: greater numbers of students passing through the system, plus more intensive exchange of knowledge in the field of business administration. The share repurchase will not affect students or any other parties to whom obligations are due within the framework of the agreement.

Research & Publications

PhD Conferred on Frieda Rikkers
On 26 February, Frieda Rikkers was awarded a doctorate for her thesis ‘Empirical Essays on Credit Risk Modeling’. Her promoter was Prof. André E. Thibeault. According to Rikkers, banks have an inadequate picture of the credit risk of small- and medium-size businesses. This makes them less inclined to give credit to the small- and medium-size business sector, which hinders the growth of such businesses. Read more (in Dutch)

Book on Succession in Family Businesses
In family businesses, too little attention is usually paid to the succession process. The outside world often thinks that successors land on a bed of roses, but just as often the process can seem more like a bed of nails. In the book ‘Gespreid bedje of spijkerbed’ (Bed of Roses or Bed of Nails), authors Jacqueline van Zwol and Nyenrode’s Prof. Roberto Flören sketch portraits of eight successors, accompanied by facts and figures resulting from research.

Jaap Schaveling Going for Doctorate
On 16 April, Jaap Schaveling hopes to be awarded a doctorate for his research on successful interim management. In his research he has identified the success factors in 141 interim management assignments. His promoters are Professors Jaap van Muijen and Kees van Montfort. For more information, email: j.schaveling@nyenrode.nl

The Year 2008 in Financial Reports
On 2 February, Prof. Ruud Vergoossen RA presented the report 'Het jaar 2008 verslagen: onderzoek jaarverslaggeving’ (The Year 2008 in Financial Reports: a study of annual financial reports) to Bernard Wientjes, chairman of VNO-NCW. This edition examines the annual accounts of the banks and insurance companies in the FTSE Eurofirst 300 index. Among other things, the report investigates the extent to which the valuation of financial instruments at current value contributed to the credit crisis. Research by Bert-Jan Bout, Ralph ten Hoeven and Nyenrode’s Prof. Henk Langendijk shows that fair value accounting has not had a procyclical effect because debts as well as financial assets are valued at current value. This has the effect of decreasing fluctuations. Click here to read further. (in Dutch)
