15th Family Business Day on Theme of Crisis
On 4 November, the 15th Family Business Day was organized by Nyenrode together with Baker Tilly Berk and ABN AMRO. The theme was 'The family business in the crisis'. Research by Nyenrode's Center for Entrepreneurship has shown that family businesses are more stable than others, performing better, particularly during times of crisis. Of course, family firms are also affected by the crisis, but they respond in a different way than non-family businesses. Their top priority is to retain personnel. In general, family businesses consider this even more important that maintaining profitability. For that reason, many family firms have eaten into their capital reserves. Fifty percent of them have used the crisis as an opportunity to give extra consideration to innovation, with many concluding that the crisis has ultimately benefitted their business. In addition to the announcement of the results of this major survey of Dutch family businesses, the meeting was addressed by a variety of interesting speakers: Hans Kroeze, general director of the Netherlands' biggest family business (Asito, with about 65,000 employees), Nyenrode alumnus Klaas Kloosterboer, the owner of Kloosterboer, Alex van Hooff, the director of Burgers' Zoo, Henk Aa and his son and Nyenrode alumnus Daan Aa of Beaphar, and Joop Leliveld, the former director of the bankrupt construction company Midreth.
