Grief at Nyenrode on death of Karel Van Miert
The Nyenrode Business Universiteit, the Nieuwe Compagnie van Verre (NCV) student association and the Voortgezette Compagnie van Verre (VCV) alumni association are stunned by the death of Professor Karel Van Miert. In 2000, he succeeded Mrs Neelie Kroes as President of Nyenrode and held that position until 2003. As a senior lecturer on Competition, Van Miert was still a prominent figure at Nyenrode. He helped lay the foundations for the Nyenrode Institute for Competition (NIC) and was chairman of the NIC until this day.
Henjo Hielkema, President of Nyenrode Business Universiteit: “We will remember our Karel Van Miert as a man with great expertise and an inspiring style of leadership who always focused on the individual. It was during his presidency that the Dr. Albert Heijn Building was opened, and this building is now at the centre of Nyenrode. He also worked hard in an individual capacity for the estate and campus. He financed the restoration of the historic arbour in the rose garden from the proceeds from his lectures and other public appearances. It is a beautiful monument to a highly respected colleague who will be sorely missed.”
Désirée van Gorp, Director of the Nyenrode Institute for Competition: “Karel Van Miert was loved by the students in his capacity of senior lecturer on Competition Policy. He unstintingly shared his knowledge and great experience regarding EU competition policy. In combination, his passion for this subject and his commitment to the students made his lectures a unique experience. Students and staff share precious memories of a well-loved tutor and a remarkable colleague.”
